Interviewing the Elders

On Saturday March 22, 2003, the Elders from the Dunbar Alumni Federation and the students came together at NVLP headquarters for a day of interviews. Having completed their research and training, the students could not wait to put into practice everything they had learned during the past month. Each student team set up their interview, including selecting the location and setting up the videotaping equipment. The morning taping session included interviews with Dr. Paul Cooke ‘33, Mr. James Banks ‘36, Mrs. Nora Drew Gregory ‘30, Mrs. Lauretta Chambers Jackson ‘45, and Dr. Jean Sinkford ‘49. That afternoon the second group of students completed their interviews with General Elmer T. Brooks ‘49, Dr. Lawrence Graves, and Mrs. Virginia Fowler Hightower ‘34.

Working with the students from Dunbar, the NVLP produced a short compilation tape of their experience. The Elders and the students reviewed the transcripts of their interviews and picked the sections they wanted to be included. Students then participated in the editing process at NVLP. The finished video was shown at a student assembly held at Dunbar in May. It will be shown again in October at the Dunbar Alumni Federation gala.
